09:52 pm - Long Time No Post
Hello there! I've been lurking on LJ for a while but haven't posted in some time. Anyway, I'm here to talk about my latest project...
The Browncoat Ball!
The Browncoat Ball is a weekend-long shindig for fans of Firefly and Serenity. It's held in a different city each year, and each city does its own thing, but all of them feature a dinner and fancy dress-up ball on Saturday night. Well, for 2011 the New England Browncoats put in a bid, and we won! And somehow I seem to be in charge of it. ;)
The event will be held October 21-23 in Providence/Warwick, RI. We'll gather on Friday for various entertainments including a Halloween party. Saturday during the day we'll send people out touring: one group will go to the mansions in Newport, RI, and another group will tour sites related to native son H.P. Lovecraft (and also pop over to Lizzie Borden's house). A third group will hang out and be social. Then we'll all reunite for the Ball in the evening. On Sunday we'll have a final opportunity to gather before people depart.
Another cool thing we have planned is that one guy in our group has collected quite an assortment of actual props from the show and the movie, and he's going to organize a Prop Museum at the hotel for us. I'll loan him my Reaver sword for the weekend. :)
If you're interested, visit http://www.browncoatball.com! I've even ventured into podcasting, so you can hear my dulcet tones telling you about our big plans.
I may even manage to enjoy the event. ;)

10:58 pm - Steampunk Festival a Success!
Yesterday's Steampunk Festival was very successful. The museum was hoping for 300-400 people and got over 1000! People seemed to be having a great time.
My talk on props only had a few attendees, but it started only half an hour after the festival opened so I am not surprised. In any case I had a nice chat with people about prop ideas. After that, I strapped on my personal airship and had great fun wandering around the festival while wearing it. I can actually get through crowds quite well -- it's tall, not wide, so as long as I do not encounter any wandering stiltwalkers it's fine. I got lots of compliments and posed for many photos, and at the end of the day I was declared the winner of the People's Choice costume contest, so my ego is quite happy! :D
There was also a raffle. I donated a prize, a painted Nerf Maverick, and also bought some tickets to support the museum. Of all the prizes available, guess which prize they pulled my ticket for? :P I told the MC "I made that, so pull someone else's name!" ;)
Here are a couple of photos:

12:31 pm - Steampunk Festival This Saturday!
The New England Steampunk Festival at the Charles River Museum of Industry & Innovation is this Saturday, May 1st, from 10-4. There will be live music, Victorian dancing, sword fighting demonstrations, a fashion show, a raffle, lectures, and face painting. Make sure to dress up in costume to enter the costume contest and get some raffle tickets so you have the chance to win some really awesome prizes!
I will be doing a presentation on "Steampunk Prop Making for Beginners" at 10:30am. After that I will likely be wandering around with an airship strapped to my back. :)

08:55 pm - SCIENCE! and Neil Gaiman
CBS Sunday Morning did an interview with Neil Gaiman that aired this past Sunday, and they used footage from his book signing at Worldcon back in August to show what some of his fans are like. Guess who shows up in her mad scientist's brain-hat at about the 4:15 mark? BWAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!! :D

07:54 pm - Arisia!
Arisia, our local SF con, was held last weekend, and once again I entered the Masquerade. Last year I won Best in Show, so I figured I had to enter something! ;) I brought back Dr. Von Fishbottle, the steampunk mad scientist whose inventions go awry; this year she had her own personal dirigible! Check out the photos in this set (linked to first of several photos):
The name of the presentation was "Another Victory for Science." I haven't found video of the skit yet, but I'm hopeful one will turn up. The skit involved me walking out on stage while a recorded narration describes my incredible Personal Airship Apparatus, which is totally safe. In the meantime I've actually gone out of control, am weaving all over the stage, and end up going offstage with a crashing sound. :)
I got a workmanship award for the prop, and Best In Class - Journeyman for the whole thing! :D Yay! One more win at that level and I get kicked upstairs to Craftsman level, though.

11:02 pm - Home, finally
The flight out of O'Hare was four frickin' hours late departing, but I finally made it home. For once it really wasn't the weather's fault -- there was a problem with the first plane, and they needed to get a part, but apparently the part didn't work so they had to scrounge up a whole new plane. :P
I spent the holiday at my sister's house in Iowa, hence traveling via O'Hare. Things mostly went well, except my 6-year-old niece got a stomach bug and was sleeping a lot, though she rallied for opening her gifts Christmas morning. :)

09:44 am - RSS LJ Feeds are Down Again
If you read the feed from http://nescifievents.org/ via LiveJournal, the feed hasn't been updated since yesterday. It's listed on LJ's help page as a known problem. See the main website for the latest posts... especially if you like (shudder) "Twilight". ;)
