05:50 pm - Want Some Medieval Books?
I am purging my overstuffed bookshelves, and I have a stack of books about the Middle Ages from my college and active SCA days that I've decided I am highly unlikely to read again. If you think you'd be interested in them, or know of a good place to give them to, I'm open to ideas. I looked at the Waltham public library's website and it says they don't want books over 10 years old, so that's not an option. :P

10:05 pm - LJ's RSS Feeds are Wacky
I noticed that nescifievents hasn't shown my last few updates, so I checked LJ's status page and apparently all the RSS feeds are down. So for those of you who watch this journal and also the blog feed, be aware that I've got another three entries over at http://nescifievents.org/ that you haven't seen, and you know how ABSOLUTELY CRUCIAL it is to stay up to date on these things!!! ;) (Summary: Chris Claremont will zombiedance on Talk Like a Pirate Day, or something like that.)

10:14 am - Frizz Time!
Due to my laziness about getting haircuts, my hair's gotten quite long -- long enough that I could do one of those "Locks of Love" hair donations if I were willing to suddenly go for a very short haircut, which I haven't had in a very long time. I should do some research on the hair donation part, though, as I recall hearing that the Locks of Love charity was a little iffy. One way or another it's long past time to get the hair cut back to a more manageable length.
Or I could learn to make Leia buns out of it.

05:29 pm - Annoyances
Some very determined spambot is hitting every post ever made to http://nescifievents.org, trying to leave comments containing total gibberish. As I understand it, the spambots actually do track which combination of gibberish they leave where, so if a comment goes live they can come back and spam the hell out of that vulnerable page. I moderate the comments, so none of the spam will get through to the live site, but it's fraking annoying. This is the first time I've had a spambot hit every single post (which is over 100 by this point); usually they just leave one or two comments on older posts, presumably in the hope that I won't notice. *grump*

02:03 pm - Woohoo!
My company has handed out movie theater gift certificates and told us to take the afternoon off and go see a movie! :D I'm off to see "Ponyo", the latest Miyazaki import.

Kyle Cassidy, a professional photographer who works with Neil Gaiman, was taking pictures of fans (costumed and not) at Worldcon for a project on what fans look like. There's a very nice one of me in my steampunk gear that day:

08:12 am - Worldcon Masquerade Results
Well, I entered the improved version of my steampunk mad-scientist-with-a-hamster-gun costume in Worldcon's Masquerade, and came away with an Honorable Mention for the Journeyman class. There was some seriously impressive competition! I did get a lot of compliments from random people as well. :) I was a little surprised not to get any workmanship nods for my props, but you never know what any individual judge will be impressed by. Oh well!
Otherwise the convention is going quite well. I took a "ghost tour" of Old Town Montreal where the morbid guide takes you to various places that are supposed to be haunted. :) Old Town still retains much of its old European flair; I plan to go exploring on my own eventually.
I was surprised to see economist Paul Krugman was speaking at the con; I built the websites for his textbooks at work. Apparently he's a sci-fi fan.
I have two days left and will drive back down on Tuesday.

07:32 pm - Well, Crap
My out-of-warranty desktop PC, which has been acting a little wacky lately, has finally crashed. XP won't start, system is corrupted, it won't boot into safe mode or last known good configuration, blah blah blah... It had started making *ka-chunk-ka-chunk* noises over the weekend, which is generally considered not to be a good thing in a computer. :P Luckily I have an external hard drive and backed up my data while I could; also luckily I have a netbook so I can still surf teh intarwebs.
I was hoping to nurse it along until October, when I can get a computer with Windows 7 and thus avoid buying at the tail end of Vista's lifespan. If it's dead, then so be it -- the netbook will probably be good enough for a couple of months.
If anyone has a local PC repair shop they particularly like (I live in Waltham), I'm open to recommendations.

12:01 pm - What weird parallel universe have I entered?
When I got to my car at the Alewife parking garage last night, there was a dent and a paint scrape along the driver's-side back door. Clearly someone had dinged the car while pulling out of the adjacent space. It appears to be all cosmetic damage -- I have no functional trouble with the door or its window.
Miracle of miracles, the person actually left me a note with their phone number! Furthermore, when I called her today, she had already contacted her own insurance agency and had a claim number!! It's so terrible to say it, but my mind was rather boggled at her honesty (I did tell her how much I appreciated it). Most of the time you get dings like that and the culprit just sneaks away.
On top of that, so far my dealings with the insurance company have been smooth and trouble-free, and they say I'm totally covered for the damage! I should go play the lottery or something. Tomorrow morning I'll take the car for an evaluation and we'll see if my luck holds.

04:34 pm - Nice Apartment in Dorchester
Some friends of mine are looking for tenants for a nice two-bedroom place in Dorchester. If you know of anyone who's looking for apartments in that area, I'll get you connected.
